The Breath of Rehab

We refer to our breath and breathing throughout our daily conversation, using such expressions as "I need a breather", or "Stop breathing down my neck". But seldom do we think to look to breathing patterns as an indicator of functional performance ability or a hindrance to therapeutic progress.

Dysfunctional breathing patterns interfere with all body systems and, if not evaluated and treated along with more traditional treatment sessions, will delay or curtail the patient reaching their potential for recovery goals.

Breathing patterns are as individual as fingerprints. Dysfunctional breathing pattern types are numerous and may not be of one simple type but a combination of two or more types.

Assessment of breathing pattern disorders utilizes both observation skills and definitive measurements. Treatment techniques for breathing pattern disorders range from therapist supervised to home exercise program components.

The Breath of Rehab seminar provides an overview of breathing including anatomical, chemical and mechanical. The seminar provides forms and instruction for a full assessment of breathing pattern disorders, including the materials needed. Also included are exercises for the remediation of dysfunctional breathing.

This seminar provides direction in methods of reimbursement as well as ICD9 and CPT coding.

Note: Therapists who smoke should not take this seminar. Deep breathing exercises are contraindicated for smokers.
